Oral Hygiene | North Miami Beach, FL
Why is oral hygiene so important?
Maintaining proper oral hygiene is essential for preserving both dental and overall health. Adults over the age of 35 are more likely to lose teeth due to periodontal (gum) disease than from cavities, with nearly three out of four individuals experiencing some form of gum disease during their lifetime.
The most effective way to prevent tooth decay and periodontal disease is through consistent daily brushing and flossing using proper techniques.
Both gum disease and tooth decay are caused by bacterial plaque—a colorless, sticky film that continuously forms on the teeth, particularly along the gumline. Without proper removal, plaque can lead to inflammation, infection, and long-term oral health complications. Daily brushing and flossing are essential to controlling plaque and maintaining a healthy smile.
Proper Tooth brushing Technique
We recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush and the following method for effective cleaning:
- Position the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle where the teeth meet the gums
- Use small, gentle circular motions to clean the outer tooth surfaces
- Apply light pressure to allow bristles to reach between teeth without causing discomfort
- Clean the inner surfaces of back teeth using the same technique
- For the inner surfaces of front teeth, hold the brush vertically and use gentle up-and-down strokes
- Brush the chewing surfaces with short, controlled strokes
- Ensure all tooth surfaces are thoroughly cleaned by adjusting the brush position as needed
- Rinse thoroughly after brushing to remove loosened debris
Brushing should be performed at least twice daily for optimal results.
Proper Flossing Technique
Because toothbrushes cannot reach between teeth, flossing is essential for preventing periodontal disease. To floss effectively:
- Use approximately 18 inches of dental floss
- Wind the floss around your middle fingers, leaving a small section to work with
- Hold the floss firmly between your thumbs and index fingers
- Gently guide it between teeth using a back-and-forth motion
- Curve the floss into a “C” shape against each tooth and slide it beneath the gumline
- Clean each tooth thoroughly, using a fresh section of floss as you move along
- Avoid snapping or forcing the floss, which can damage gum tissue
- Rinse your mouth after flossing
Mild bleeding or sensitivity may occur initially but should subside as your gums become healthier with consistent flossing.
Caring for Sensitive Teeth
Temporary sensitivity to hot or cold may occur following dental treatment. This typically resolves with proper oral hygiene. If sensitivity persists or is significant, specialized toothpaste or medicated rinses designed for sensitive teeth may be recommended.
Choosing Oral Hygiene Products
With many products available, selecting the right tools can be challenging. General recommendations include:
- Electric toothbrushes are safe and highly effective for most patients
- Water irrigators can help rinse debris but should be used alongside brushing and flossing—not as a replacement
- Interdental brushes can assist in cleaning between teeth but should be used with proper technique to avoid gum injury
- Fluoride toothpaste and rinses help strengthen enamel and reduce decay when used consistently
- Tartar-control toothpaste may reduce buildup above the gumline but does not prevent gum disease below it
- Antimicrobial rinses can support gum health when used in conjunction with daily oral hygiene
We are happy to provide personalized recommendations based on your specific needs.
Professional Dental Cleanings
Even with excellent at-home care, plaque can harden into calculus (tartar), which cannot be removed by brushing and flossing alone. Professional dental cleanings are necessary to remove these deposits and address areas that are difficult to reach at home.
Routine visits to our office are a vital part of maintaining long-term oral health, preventing gum disease, and ensuring a healthy, confident smile for years to come.
