Sedation Dentistry

We utilize sedation dentistry to help patients feel relaxed and comfortable during their treatments. It is especially helpful for patients who experience anxiety, fear, or difficulty staying still while receiving dental care.

Why is sedation dentistry needed?

Many people delay or avoid dental visits because of stress, fear of pain, or past negative experiences. Sedation dentistry makes it possible for these patients to receive the care they need in a calm and stress-free environment. It can also help with longer procedures by making them feel quicker and easier for the patient.

Sedation dentistry is also beneficial when working with patients who have physical, mental, or sensory limitations that may impede their ability to receive proper dental care. If you or a loved one needs dental care but has limitations that may make care difficult, please let us know when scheduling so that we can discuss sedation options with you.

Types of Sedation Dentistry

  • Nitrous Oxide: Often referred to as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small mask, providing immediate relaxation for our patients. It creates a light, calming effect and wears off quickly after the procedure.
  • Oral Sedation: Patients take medication in pill form before the appointment. This produces a deeper level of relaxation, although they remain awake and able to respond if needed.
  • IV Sedation: Delivered through a vein, this method provides a stronger level of sedation. Patients often feel drowsy, slipping out of what is sometimes called “twilight sleep,” and may remember little of the procedure.

Training in Dental Sedation

Our dentists who provide sedation have received specialized training in the safe use of sedation. They know how to select the most suitable type of sedation for each patient, monitor vital signs throughout the procedure, and respond promptly to any changes. This training allows them to combine effective dental treatment with patient comfort and safety.
